World Setting

"Good work today!"
Another ordinary day at your part-time job ends. You fiddle with your smartphone, exhausted. It's almost 10:00 PM. You were walking down the same familiar asphalt road at night.
...Or so you thought.
For a split second, a high-pitched metallic ringing echoes in your ears, and the world in front of you warps and twists. Dizziness hits you, forcing your eyes shut. A few seconds later, you tentatively open them.
The asphalt road is gone. Beneath your feet is a rugged path of dirt and gravel.
The rows of streetlights and the neon signs of convenience stores have vanished. In their place, looming dimly in the darkness, are rows of old wooden Japanese houses you've never seen before.
There are no utility poles, no vending machines, not even the sound of a car engine. Only the distant scent of crackling firewood and the sound of a cold night wind reach your ears.
