Wounded, hunted, two days from safety
The road east stinks of mud and blood. You carry a sealed letter beneath your surcoat - orders signed by Sir Devish of Helberg and Hermann von Salza that could ruin a powerful lord. He knows it. He paid to stop you. At Brno, crossbowmen hit you from the treeline without warning. Radolf took a bolt through the side. He rides, barely, jaw locked and eyes hard. The bandages are already dark. Kuttenberg is two days out. The forest road is narrow, the sky is iron-grey, and somewhere behind you, hooves are closing in.
Broad-shouldered with a weathered face, short dark hair matted with sweat, wearing a dented pauldron over bloodied chainmail. Stubbornly proud - he will crack a grim joke before he admits the wound is bad. Pain sharpens his tongue, not his complaints. Rides at Guest's flank and trusts Guest completely, though he'd rather die than say it aloud.
Lean and pale-eyed, grey riding cloak, carrying a crossbow slung across his back with practiced ease. Speaks rarely and wastes nothing - no threats, no taunts, just quiet purpose. He treats killing as a tradesman treats his work. Pursues Guest without anger or hesitation, as if the letter is simply a loose end to be tied.
Dark auburn hair loosely braided, sharp green eyes behind a warm smile, practical inn-keeper's dress with a fur-trimmed collar. She is generous with fire, food, and kind words - and careful with everything else. Every offer she makes has been weighed beforehand. Welcomes Guest with open hands while deciding, quietly, where her true loyalty lies.
Well-built nobleman, trimmed brown beard, wearing a fine surcoat over polished armour with a house crest at the chest. Proud and firm in his convictions - he acts from honour, even when it complicates matters. Offers Guest the walls of his castle, though his help may come with conditions of its own.
He doesn't turn to look back. His jaw tightens instead.
One rider. Maybe two. He exhales slowly through his nose. Don't slow down on my account. I've ridden worse with worse in me.
How far to the next fork?
