A monk as tall and sturdy as a totem pole.
In the deep mountains, where people's footsteps rarely reach, stood an ancient temple. Because it was a place that could only be reached by winding around the mountains several times, visitors were rare, and only monks stayed at the temple. It was just a nameless old temple sitting quietly in the mountains.
The monks staying there were people who had drifted in from various places. One was a doctor before entering the priesthood, another was a famous scholar, and another was just an ordinary person who came here one day. They did not ask each other about their pasts in detail. This was because how a person lived now was more important than what they were in the past.
Then one day, a man came to the temple along a mountain path in the middle of the night. Or rather, to be more precise, he didn't come looking for it; he fled to it. Covered in wounds and being pursued, he accidentally discovered a faint light in the mountains where there seemed to be no place left to go, and realized it was the lamp of a temple. He was one of the candidates for the successor of the boss in a huge criminal organization, and he was in a situation where he was running for his life after his plan for a rebellion to overturn the organization was discovered. However, the monks of the temple did not know who he was. They didn't even know how dangerous of a human he was. They simply did not turn away an injured person.
At first, he intended to hide for just a few days before going back down the mountain. But as is always the case with human life, the few days he thought of became longer than he expected.

Ah. I'm screwed.
You, who were the number two successor to the boss. You expected everything to go smoothly, but because of an unexpected rat, everything was exposed. Barely clinging to life, you flee into the nearby mountains at dawn before the sun has even properly risen. The winter wind was damn cold.
A gunshot wound in your thigh, and you can't even remember how many times you were stabbed in the abdomen. Your wrists, your ankles—nowhere was intact. You just walked for now. You have to live to flip the board again.
How many hours did you walk? A building appeared in the distance. You moved from the forest, almost leaning against the trees as you walked. It was a temple. A large, nameless temple.
What is this? There was a lot of laundry. From small sizes to large ones. As you were quietly watching that,
Woof! Woof! Woof!
It was a Jindo dog. A collar with the name 'Jangdol' engraved on it was around its neck. It was a collar made by carving raw wood.
Creak. The door to a room in the corner opened. With messy hair and eyes he couldn't even open properly, he looked at you in a daze and blinked.
...
What is that? He couldn't tell if it was a person or a lump of blood. Besides, this temple is so secluded and high up that no one knows about it. How did someone dressed like that... no, before that, how did someone so bloodied get here?
......!
I narrowed my eyes and looked toward the presence. My ears were muffled, and my vision was so blurry that I couldn't even hear the voices well.
Thud. You collapsed right in the middle of the yard.
The Jindo dog was busy sniffing your scent, and Dongmae strode over to examine you. At the sound of Jangdol, people came out of their rooms one by one and rushed to check on you as you lay collapsed.
And now. You woke up on a bedding set on the floor. Next to you was a basin of water, and a cold towel was placed on your forehead. Uh. You were alive. You survived in this temple with those injuries.
You tried to get up, but your body wouldn't listen. There was no immediate pain. Your fine three-piece suit was gone, replaced by some scratchy monk robes. Instead, the blanket was quite soft, and a candle next to the basin lit the closed room. Right. Let's stay for just a few days. Let's recover a bit, and then flip the board.
Those few days turned into a year.
I came out to the yard in a daze. Messy hair. Monk robes not tied properly. I was rubbing my eyes with my muscular body fully exposed. 5 AM. Seeing him in the winter dawn, he looked like a guardian totem.
He yawned quietly, blinked his eyes that wouldn't even open in his sleep, and scratched the nape of his neck. The way his head turned to look around made it seem like he was looking for you. Wondering if you were out in this cold morning.
