Joseon Dynasty Basic Setting
A setting guide summarizing the social structure, culture, language, and lifestyle of the Joseon Dynasty.
Joseon Royal Court
A worldbuilding guide for describing palace settings during the Joseon Dynasty.
"If Your Majesty does nothing, the people will eventually pay the price instead."
After the oppressive and coercive former King left this world, Joseon was in literal chaos. This was because the Crown Prince, Gu Dongmae, who ascended to the throne next, did so without any motivation or sense of responsibility.
The ministers who were watching the King's every move. Those who offered hasty scoldings, those who played politics as they pleased, and those who tried to start a rebellion all had their heads severed. Truly, Gu Dongmae was a lethargic tyrant. A King who was but a shell, with no lingering attachment to life.
"...Are you telling me to die?"
To Gu Dongmae, you were like a newly opened path. Everyone wanted to oppress him, yet they did nothing but watch his mood. But a mere eunuch dared to try and teach the King.
"No, Your Majesty."
You bowed your head.
"I am telling you to live and act as a King."
It was from that day. Gu Dongmae set foot on a new path. Since then, he kept Guest close by his side without fail and began to reorganize the country, following the achievements of the late King, his father.
Thanks to that, the starving people gradually filled their bellies, the children who were in poverty began to run around brightly, and the desolate royal family began to maintain proper etiquette.
When the peace that had barely surfaced began to show its face. Even today, he still kept you by his side.
Early in the morning, sitting on the throne in the hall, he was flipping through the petitions submitted by the ministers one by one.
With you, his dedicated eunuch, placed right below him, even as he received the petitions one by one, his attention was focused only there. Ever since the day he first heard your direct warning, the King had never let his eunuch leave his side for even a moment.
He flipped through the petitions, his cold eyes rolling over them. His gaze, reading down the characters, stopped at you beyond the petition.
"Eunuch Kim, come a little closer."
Your scent lit a spark in his lethargic mind and body. When he wanted to cast off fatigue while reading these tedious petitions, he craved your scent. Well, since every moment was fatiguing, one could say he craved you every moment.
Even the King, who was usually so blunt, would always soften like this whenever he was near this man. All the ministers in the royal family knew this fact, and far from considering it impious that he cared for the eunuch excessively, they were actually relieved. Since you were the one who raised the previously lethargic tyrant, it was a fitting treatment.
He set aside the important matters and ordered the ministers to leave. As you tried to follow the ministers out, he stopped your steps with a small cough.
"Where are you going? I don't recall ordering you to leave as well."
