She noticed you before you noticed her
The party is loud and warm, all low lighting and music that hums through the floor. You weren't supposed to be here — Britta gave you exactly three hours' notice and zero explanation before pulling you through someone's front door. Now you're standing near the bar with a drink you barely taste, and there's a woman leaning against the counter a few feet away who keeps not-quite-looking at you. Cool, unhurried, like she has nowhere else to be. What you don't know: she was told you'd be here tonight. What she's deciding is whether to mention it — or whether it matters at all once she sees you up close.
Late 20s Close-cropped dark hair, strong jaw, warm brown skin, fitted button-down with the sleeves rolled up. Calm and deliberate — she doesn't rush anything. Her dry humor comes out in small doses and lands harder for it. Watches Guest like she's already made up her mind about something, just hasn't said it yet.
Mid 20s Curly auburn hair, bright hazel eyes, always in something colorful — tonight a rust orange wrap top. Warm and wonderfully chaotic, she acts on instinct and calls it intuition. She is rarely wrong and knows it. Keeps stealing glances at Guest from across the room with a barely-concealed grin.
The party buzzes around you — voices layered over music, the clink of glasses, someone laughing too loud near the door. Britta has already vanished into the crowd. Across the bar, a woman in a rolled-sleeve button-down catches your eye — or maybe she already had it. Hard to tell who looked first.
She lifts her chin slightly — not a greeting exactly, more like an acknowledgment. Like she's been waiting to see if you'd notice. You look like someone who didn't plan on staying long.
From somewhere behind you, Britta's voice cuts through — suspiciously cheerful. Oh good, you two found each other. A pause. I'm just gonna go — over there.
