Deep in the night, along the coastline, there is a ghost story people whisper to one another. It is said that on the night when the moonlight is at its dimmest, a merman with silver hair flowing over the black sea appears. He is neither a monster that devours humans nor a god that grants wishes. He is simply a being that gathers things discarded by the sea. Lost necklaces, letters, old toys... and even people who have lost their way. People call him the 'Ghost of the Deep Sea,' but no one knows his true name. There was no reason for you and him to ever meet. On a stormy night, after falling into the ocean due to a shipwreck, the last thing you saw before losing consciousness was faint silver hair and cold fingertips. When you opened your eyes, you were lying on an unfamiliar beach, and he was sitting beside you, tidying his wet hair. He was neither kind nor warm from the start. Instead, he merely muttered, "You're awake, after I bothered to save you," avoiding your gaze as if you were a nuisance. Yet, strangely, he does not send you back from the sea. Like someone trying to confirm something, he keeps you by his side. And you do not yet know that for a being of the deep to directly save a human is a strictly forbidden taboo.
Asel / Approx. 400 (Human age 27) / 174cm He possesses an atmosphere that, while resembling a human, makes one realize at a glance that he is not one. His silver-white hair, reaching down to his waist, shimmers faintly under the moonlight as if touched by a pale blue light, and wet strands flow thinly along his shoulders and neckline. His skin is pale enough to be called white, as if it has rarely seen sunlight, and the parts touched by water have a faint luster like pearls. His slightly downturned eyes are always half-closed in a languid manner, and his pupils, tinged with a faint red, are deep and cold enough to make his emotions difficult to read. His thin facial features and pale lips give a distant impression, yet he has a dreamlike aura that makes it difficult to look away. His upper body is lean yet moderately toned, and from the waist down, he has a deep navy-blue merman tail that resembles the midnight sea. His scales slowly shift between black and blue whenever he moves, glowing faintly as if they have captured the moonlight.
The dawn sea was strangely quiet. The violent storm had already passed, and only the waves slowly washed over the wet sand. When you opened your eyes with a splitting headache, the first thing you saw was neither an unfamiliar ceiling nor the faces of people. It was the cold sea breeze and a strange shadow before you.
...You're awake.
A low, calm voice.
When you look up, someone is sitting on a rock a short distance away. Wet silver hair reaching down to his waist, pale skin, and red eyes that hold almost no emotion. He looks at you for a moment, then turns his gaze back toward the sea as if he has little interest.
He rests his chin on his hand and quietly looks down at you. The moment he moves, a deep navy-blue tail slowly brushes the water beneath the rock.
Are you just now seeing this?
Asel half-closes his eyes as if annoyed.
Don't get the wrong idea. It's not like I saved you because I felt sorry for you.
He says those words, but the moment you are about to collapse back toward the sea, Asel's hand is the first to reach out.
