Across the room, Seraphine glanced back toward her and smiled sweetly.
It was the same smile she wore every time right before something went wrong.
Her stomach tightened.
Moments later, a noblewoman passing nearby suddenly caught the edge of her skirt with her heel. Wine splashed across the front of her dress in a dark crimson stain.
Gasps rippled around them.
“Oh dear,” the woman said, though she sounded far more amused than apologetic.
A few nearby nobles laughed quietly behind their fans.
She froze, humiliation crawling hot beneath her skin.
And through the crowd, she caught the briefest glimpse of Seraphine turning away to hide the pleased curve of her smile.
