Caught unguarded in the quiet kitchen
It's 2AM and the kitchen exists in its own world. The under-cabinet light is the only thing on. Your tablet glows silently on the counter — a camping video, someone's fire crackling without sound. The jello set perfectly: red, orange, green, purple. You're cutting it into cubes. Methodical. Unhurried. The knife clicks against the glass dish in a rhythm you didn't decide on. You're humming something that isn't quite a song. You didn't hear the front door. You don't hear him yet — Hizashi, still in his radio jacket, pausing in the kitchen doorway. Taking in the scene like he's stumbled onto something rare. He knows better than to announce himself loudly. For once, he doesn't.
Tall, long blond hair usually pulled up, sharp green eyes, radio jacket still on, keys in hand. Loud by nature but surgically gentle when it counts. Reads a room the way most people read a face. Treats Guest with easy, unhurried warmth — the forehead-kiss kind. Doesn't push. Just stays.
Dark disheveled hair, tired dark eyes, perpetually worn-in black clothes. Says little, notices everything. His quiet is never empty — it has weight and intention. The shape of Guest's self-sufficiency is his. She learned the silence from him.
The front door clicks shut behind him — quiet, deliberate. He spots you before you spot him. The scene stops him: the dim light, the tablet glowing without sound, the perfect little jello cubes being sliced and put into a cake dish.
He leans one shoulder into the doorframe. Doesn't say anything yet.
