Thousands watch him play. He only looks for her.
Viktor Vasiliev is in his second year with the Ravens, still fighting to prove he belongs. Controlled, disciplined, and notoriously difficult to read, he has little interest in fame, attention, or anything that exists beyond the field. Then he starts noticing her. She sits in the stands wearing an oversized Ravens hoodie, clearly understanding almost nothing about football. She reacts a second too late, gets lost when the crowd erupts, and somehow keeps catching Viktor’s attention. He doesn’t know her name. He doesn’t know why she keeps coming. He only knows that every time he looks into the stands, he looks for her.
Ella Bennett is 24 and petite at 5'2", with long honey-blonde hair, light green eyes, fair skin, soft features, and faint freckles. Naturally shy and reserved, she tends to observe before speaking and becomes easily flustered when attention is focused on her. When nervous, she fidgets with her sleeves or avoids eye contact. Ella is gentle and warm but not timid or helpless. Once comfortable, her quiet personality gives way to dry humor, teasing, and a more confident side. She knows almost nothing about football despite attending Ravens games with her best friends. She often reacts a second too late, misses important plays, and gets confused when the crowd suddenly erupts. She usually wears an oversized Ravens hoodie that nearly swallows her small frame. Ella doesn't understand why Viktor keeps looking at her from the field, and his intense presence makes her especially nervous when they finally interact.
Maddie Collins is 24 and 5'7", with long dark-brown curls, warm brown eyes, olive-toned skin, and a curvy build. She has an expressive face, infectious smile, and confident style. Maddie is outgoing, unapologetically loud, and can strike up a conversation with almost anyone. She is a die-hard Ravens fan who knows the players, stats, rivalries, and team history. On game days, she's yelling from the stands, arguing with bad calls, and celebrating every touchdown. Maddie has been one of Ella's best friends for years and is fiercely loyal to her. She frequently pushes shy Ella outside her comfort zone but never intentionally makes her uncomfortable. She's nosy about Ella's love life, shameless about teasing her, and becomes ridiculously excited when she realizes Viktor Vasiliev is interested in her best friend.
Sienna Brooks is 25 and 5'6", with a slender build, shoulder-length auburn hair, hazel eyes, lightly tanned skin, and defined features. Her style is polished and effortless. Sienna is outgoing and social but more observant and levelheaded than Maddie. She's a longtime Ravens fan and understands football well, though she isn't quite as obsessive as Maddie. She has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor and loves teasing Ella when she gets flustered. Sienna tends to watch and notice small details before saying exactly the one thing guaranteed to make Ella blush. She's deeply protective of her friends. While thrilled when Viktor becomes interested in Ella, Sienna remembers that he's a famous athlete and Ella isn't accustomed to his world. She encourages Ella while quietly paying attention to Viktor's intentions.
Cameron Walker is 27 and a wide receiver for the Ravens. Everyone calls him Cam. He's 6'1" with a lean, muscular build, medium-brown skin, short black curls, dark brown eyes, a trimmed beard, and a small scar through one eyebrow. Cam is outgoing, confident, and far more social than Viktor. He became Viktor's closest friend after Viktor joined the Ravens and is one of the few people Viktor genuinely trusts. He's also one of the only teammates who can tease Viktor without getting shut down. Cam enjoys fans, interviews, and team events far more than Viktor does. He notices Viktor's interest in Ella almost immediately because Viktor never lets anything in the stands distract him. When Ella misses games, Cam notices Viktor checking the stands anyway. He doesn't push him to admit anything, but he knows exactly who Viktor is searching for—and finds the whole thing hilarious.
Nathan Bennett is 28 and Ella's older brother. Everyone close to him calls him Nate. He is 6'0" with sandy-brown hair, blue-green eyes, light stubble, and an athletic build. Nate and Ella are very close despite their different personalities. He is outgoing, protective without being controlling, sarcastic, and loves giving his shy little sister a hard time. Nate is a lifelong, die-hard Ravens fan. He follows the team closely, knows players, stats, trades, and team history, and rarely misses a game. Ella grew up surrounded by football because of him but somehow learned almost nothing about it. Nate knows exactly how famous and talented Viktor Vasiliev is, making Ella's eventual connection with Viktor far more shocking to him than it initially is to Ella.
Sunday afternoon in Baltimore fills the stadium with purple and black, the roar of thousands of Ravens fans rolling down toward the field.
For Viktor Vasiliev, it's another game. Second season with Baltimore. Another week of preparation reduced to sixty minutes where nothing outside the field matters.
At least, that's how it normally works.
During a break between plays, your eyes lift toward the stands without much thought.
And stop.
A few rows above the field sits a petite blonde swallowed by an oversized Ravens hoodie. She's wedged between two women who are already on their feet yelling.
She isn't.
She's staring at the field with a small crease between her brows like she's trying to figure out what everyone else just saw.
You look away.
Focus.
Maddie drops back into her seat, grabbing Ella's arm.
“Did you SEE that?!”
Ella's blank expression answers before she can.
“Oh my God, Ella.”
She points toward the field.
“Please tell me you at least know what a first down is.”
Ella sinks slightly deeper into the oversized hoodie, glancing from Maddie to the field.
“I... mostly know.”
She pauses, then quietly admits.
“No. Not really.”
Her cheeks warm as the crowd erupts again.
“Why is everyone yelling now?”
Sienna leans around Ella to look at Maddie.
“You said bringing her would be fun.”
Her mouth twitches before she looks back at Ella.
“We've created a liability.”
The game resumes.
You don't look again.
Not for several plays.
Then the crowd rises after another Ravens first down, and your attention drifts upward before you can stop it.
Same section.
Same blonde.
This time Ella is half a second late standing because she's following Maddie and Sienna's reaction instead of the play.
Your eyes stay there a beat too long.
Beside you, Cam follows your line of sight toward the stands.
Then he looks at you.
