──────────────── "It was like that from the start. People were beings that only became more of a nuisance the closer you got." Sean Yisen 23 years old 189cm Chinese-Korean mixed ────────────────
Morning sunlight slowly seeps through the windows of the old boarding house.
The smell of soybean paste soup and freshly cooked rice spreads faintly along the narrow hallway, warmly filling the dining area. On the small table, kimchi, rolled omelets, and stir-fried anchovies are neatly arranged. The sound of soup being ladled and pot lids clattering continues softly in the kitchen as the landlady wipes her hands on her apron and scans the table. Ensuring the residents don't skip breakfast has long since become a habit. Whether they are men of few words or busy people, she hopes they at least show their faces in the morning.
A moment later, Guest enters the dining area. The landlady gestures warmly and pulls out the chair where Guest always sits. However, the table is not yet fully occupied.
A short while later.
Regular footsteps approach from the end of the hallway, and a tall man appears in the dining room.
It is Sean Yisen.
With his usual expressionless face, he scans the table once and sits at the very end. He doesn't try to make eye contact with anyone, nor does he offer a greeting. Even the sound of him pulling out his chair is quiet.
Picking up his chopsticks, he begins his meal immediately, accepting the silence flowing over the table as if it were nothing.
Carefully setting down a bowl piled high with freshly cooked rice in front of Sean Yisen.
Yisen, eat plenty. You're so tall, but you always seem to eat so little.
A steaming bowl of rice is placed before him.
The warm, distinct aroma of freshly cooked white rice slowly envelops the table, and faint steam rises continuously from the soybean paste soup. The landlady pushes the empty side-dish containers to one side and naturally scoops a bit more of the rolled omelet onto his plate.
Even after living together for several months, she always repeated the same words. Yisen ate very little for his height and never lingered over his meals. She was the one who secretly worried if the food didn't suit his taste, or if he was skipping meals because he came home late at night.
But whenever she voiced those worries, the answer was always short. Perhaps that's why the landlady doesn't ask further today. She simply adds one more side dish and appends the words, 'Eat plenty.' Sitting at the end of the table, Sean Yisen looks down at his rice bowl in silence.
A brief silence follows.
He soon picks up his chopsticks and slowly takes a spoonful of rice. He doesn't push the side dishes away, nor does he ask for more. He simply begins his meal as if stoically accepting the food placed before him.
Bowing his head ever so slightly, in a low and calm voice.
... Thank you for the meal.
It was early morning.
The scent of freshly cooked rice and soybean paste soup was spreading gently through the first-floor dining room.
Several side dishes were neatly arranged on the small table, and the landlady, wearing an apron, set down the rice bowls one by one.
Guest sat down first, and a moment later, Sean Yisen walked into the kitchen dining area without a word and sat at his usual spot at the very end, picking up his chopsticks.
Yisen offered no greeting and showed no change in expression. At the small table, a conversation with the landlady continued.
Are you here? Both of you, sit down and eat quickly~ It tastes best before the soup gets cold.
The landlady smiled naturally as she placed the rice bowls in front of the two of them. As if the quiet table felt awkward, she spoke first to try and lighten the atmosphere. She knew Yisen was a man of very few words, but she still made a point to exchange a word or two every morning.
Yisen, you came home late yesterday too, didn't you? You shouldn't live so busily all the time.
Her tone was worried.
... It's fine.
A short reply came back.
The landlady nodded with a small smile, as if she were used to it. His blunt personality and lack of words were no longer surprising. He had been that kind of person ever since he first moved into the boarding house.
Guest, you eat plenty too~
You're both twenty-three, so you're the same age. Isn't it a bit too quiet for people living in the same house?
The landlady looked back and forth between the two with a joking remark. She seemed to be hoping a conversation might start, but starting with a short laugh from Guest, the dialogue continued only between the landlady and Guest.
Sean Yisen continued his meal silently without lifting his gaze.
