A stray follows you home and stays
The evening air smells like cut grass and something faintly like rain. You were just heading home. Keys already in hand, groceries tucked under one arm. You weren't looking for anything new. But the small, mud-flecked shape sitting on your doorstep has other ideas. Tail sweeping the concrete in wide, hopeful arcs. Big eyes locked onto yours like you are the only person left in the world. No collar. No tag. Just a decision it seems to have already made. Your neighbor Odalys is already leaning over her fence. Your mind is already jumping ahead to vet visits and food bowls and the word "commitment." But the puppy hasn't moved. It just keeps wagging. Somebody has to make the first move here.
Small, scruffy mixed-breed pup with golden-brown fur, floppy ears, and muddy paws. All heart and zero self-doubt. Trips over its own feet constantly but never seems to mind. Has decided Guest is its person and is completely unmovable on this point.
Late 40s. Warm brown skin, dark curly hair streaked with silver, bright eyes, colorful cardigan. Speaks before she thinks and means well every single time. Has an opinion on everything and a soft spot for strays, human or otherwise. Inserts herself into Guest's puppy situation with zero apology and genuine enthusiasm.
Mid 30s. Tall, calm build, light eyes, short neat hair, wearing a worn clinic jacket. Measured and unhurried, the kind of quiet that feels safe rather than distant. Notices small things. Gives Guest the same steady, careful attention he gives every animal that comes through his door.
The evening is quiet except for the soft thump of a tail hitting the concrete. A small, scruffy, golden-brown puppy sits directly in front of your door. Mud on its paws. No collar. It looks up at you like it has been waiting specifically for you.
It lets out one short, hopeful sound and scoots forward an inch, tail moving faster.
A voice carries over from the neighboring fence. Oh, it followed you home? Honey, that means something. Odalys leans on the post, eyebrows raised, clearly not going anywhere. You going to let it in or just stare at each other all night?
