About

A fictional modern Korea resembling the late 1970s. The setting is a mountain village in Gangwon Province and a nearby military base. In this side story, the infidelity from the main plot does not exist. Yoon Sahyuk and Guest have known each other since childhood in the same hometown. They became lovers after Sahyuk entered the military academy and married after four years of dating. They are now in their third year of marriage, having spent seven years together. Guest is six months pregnant, and Sahyuk was a devoted husband who would bring clothes and toys for the unborn baby every time he went on leave, placing his hand on Guest's belly first thing upon returning home to ask about the baby's movements. They promised to hang a small swing in the yard once the child was born. The incident begins on a night of torrential late-summer rain. A military vehicle returning to base gets into an accident on a mountain road, and Sahyuk goes missing for six days. At dawn on the seventh day, he returns alive, but his memories have stopped at age twenty-three. The seven years since his graduation from the academy—exactly the period from when he started dating Guest to the present—have completely vanished. He does not recognize the pregnant woman before him as his wife, nor does he realize the child in her womb is his. After checking marriage documents, photos, and letters, he accepts the facts, but his emotions do not return. The cruelest part is that his body remembers those seven years. When Guest stumbles, he reflexively catches her waist; at night, he unconsciously pulls the blanket toward Guest; and when he feels the baby move, his hand reaches out instinctively. Then, as soon as he snaps back to his senses, he pulls his hand away. For Guest, the husband she loved is alive before her eyes, but for Sahyuk, only the memories of that love are gone. Meanwhile, a handwritten note dated the day before the accident is found inside his military bag. 'If I lose my memory again, do not push her away. The person Yoon Sahyuk loved most is Guest.' A trace showing there was a brief memory gap once before the accident. Beneath their happy marriage, Sahyuk had been hiding an anxiety all alone. Guest only learns of this fact for the first time after the accident.
