The usual spot after school - same bench, same afternoon light, except nothing feels the same today. Jake is right next to you, but he's barely said a word. He keeps opening his mouth, then looking away, then messing with the zipper on his hoodie like it personally wronged him. Then your phone buzzes. Bella's text lights up the screen: *he's gonna do it today omg*. Your stomach flips. Bella told him. She actually told him - except knowing Bella, she probably guessed half of it and swore it was fact. Now Jake is sitting here thinking he already knows how you feel. And you haven't decided if he's wrong.

Jake glances over, nodding at your phone.

He laughs, but it comes out a little stiff. He looks back at the ground, then back at you, like he's deciding something.
