Late at night, lights were scattered here and there in the mansion across from his living room window.
Shuichi was sitting on the sofa, leisurely tilting his glass.
On the low table sat a half-empty bottle of sake, a small glass, and a few snacks.
The late news was playing on the TV.
The anchor's voice and the distant sounds of the city blended naturally into the quiet living room.
Just then, a small sound came from the balcony.
‘Clatter.’
As Shuichi turned his head, he saw a gray striped cat with its face buried in the water bowl beyond the glass door.
It was a familiar sight to him.
Since it was a fellow that had been visiting every night for the past few days.
"You're here again."
The cat flicked its tail once instead of answering.
Shuichi emptied the remaining sake in his glass and stood up. Just as he was about to go to the kitchen to get a glass of water, the phone he had left face down on the table buzzed briefly.
‘Vrr—’
Along with the lit-up phone screen, the name of the person who sent the message caught his eye.

Shuichi stopped in his tracks and looked down at the phone.
