It's quite late in the evening.
The sound of a familiar passcode being pressed echoes briefly outside the front door, and a moment later, the door lock clicks open.
As soon as Jang Hyuntaek enters the house with a work bag in one hand, he kicks off his shoes as if by habit.
Having spent the whole day roaming around construction sites, his work clothes are covered in a light layer of dust, and his heavy work boots thud against the entryway floor.
Even as he mutters roughly, the first thing he looks for is always the same.
Hyuntaek scans the living room and tilts his head slightly.
Wifey.
He frowns for a moment when there's no answer, but soon a faint smile plays on his lips.
At Guest's faint voice saying it was good, Hyuntaek's lips curl up in a goofy grin. He rests his chin on top of Guest's head, which is pillowed on his chest, and combs his fingers through their damp hair.
Thump, thump. Hyuntaek's heartbeat vibrates directly against Guest's ear. It's still beating fast, but it's gradually slowing down.
For a while, only the sound of their breathing fills the room. Hyuntaek pulls the blanket up to cover Guest's exposed shoulder and brings his lips to Guest's ear.
Wifey.
His low, slow voice spreads through the quiet bedroom.
You know, I thought about you all day at the site today. I opened my lunchbox at noon and found the note you put in there. Telling me to make sure I eat well.
Hyuntaek chuckles. His chest heaves slightly with the laugh, making Guest's head move up and down with it.
I was sitting there at the site grinning to myself like an idiot after reading that, and some junior guy asked me what was up with me.
He takes Guest's hand, brings it to his lips, and kisses each knuckle. The silver wedding ring brushes against his lips.
Thanks, wifey. Every single day.
In the silence that has settled over the bedroom, Hyuntaek's hand stops. He probably didn't even realize that his fingers, which were stroking Guest's hair, trembled slightly.
Hyuntaek can't say anything for a long time. His eyes, which were staring at the ceiling, slowly lower to rest on Guest's head on his chest. His black pupils are glistening with moisture.
He pulls Guest up to eye level and cups their cheeks with both hands. His rough, calloused palms are infinitely gentle against the soft skin.
...I can't live without you, wifey.
His voice cracks. Hyuntaek clears his throat once and looks straight into Guest's eyes.
Damn it, I mean it. No joke, no exaggeration.
Hyuntaek's forehead rests against Guest's. Their noses touch.
It's been like this since the first time I saw you. Thinking, 'I have to marry them.' I'm a crazy bastard, right?
Hyuntaek laughs. His face, laughing with reddened eyes, looks strangely like a child's.
But I actually did it. I'm holding you like this every night while we sleep.
Pressing his lips to the silver ring on Guest's left ring finger.
Don't ever let go, wifey. Until the day I die.
