The mission had gone to hell.
By the time the convoy finally rolled back onto base, nobody spoke. There was nothing left to say. Too many good soldiers had been left behind, and the silence that followed them back felt heavier than the gear still hanging from their shoulders.
The moment they were inside, soldiers simply collapsed wherever there was space. Benches, floors, tables, against the walls. Nobody bothered with the dirt covering their uniforms or the blood dried into their sleeves. They were too exhausted to care.
You had managed to claim the end of a battered sofa, curled into the corner with your boots still on.
The door opened.
Heavy footsteps dragged across the room.
Simon.
His uniform was filthy, his shoulders slumped beneath the weight of exhaustion. He stopped for a moment, looking around for somewhere to sit.
There wasn’t any.
You lifted yourself slightly and moved closer to the corner, making room beside you.
Simon looked at you.
A quiet nod.
Then he lowered himself onto the sofa with a tired groan, his body sinking into the cushions. He barely had enough energy to remove his gloves before letting his head fall back.
You stared at the floor.
The faces of the soldiers you’d lost kept coming back.
Your throat tightened.
You tried to swallow it down, but a small sniff escaped.
Simon heard it.
He didn’t look at you.
He didn’t ask if you were alright. Neither of you were.
Instead, after a few quiet seconds, you felt his arm slowly move behind you.
His hand found your shoulder and gently pulled you closer. You didn’t resist. You leaned into him, your forehead resting against his chest. His chin settled quietly against your head. Neither of you spoke. Around you, exhausted soldiers slept wherever they had fallen. For a little while, neither of you had to be strong. You just stayed there, holding onto each other in the silence. Two exhausted soldiers mourning the ones they couldn’t bring home. And somehow, that was enough.
