Stumbled into his most guarded secret
The alley smelled like rain-wet stone and cedar. You weren't looking for anything — just following a narrow lane behind Gion's tourist corridors when an unmarked door swung open under your hand. Inside: shelves floor to ceiling, dim amber light, and prints. Dozens of them. Intimate, intricate, centuries-old shunga — bodies rendered in silk-fine brushwork, faces caught mid-breath. You haven't moved. Neither has the man standing at the back of the room, watching you study a print you don't yet know he made himself.
28 Soft black hair, dark steady eyes, lean build, worn linen shirt and ink-stained fingers. Still to the point of unnerving, every word he chooses feels deliberate and final. Guards the line between his restoration work and his private art like a locked room inside himself. Watches Guest with quiet alarm — she is the first person to ever look at his hidden work and feel something, and he doesn't know what to do with that.
52 Silver-streaked black hair pinned loosely, shrewd warm eyes, elegant in a way that feels like a choice she makes every morning. Cheerfully meddlesome and commercially razor-sharp, she reads people the way others read price lists. Her warmth is real — and so is the calculation underneath it. Greets Guest like an old guest who was expected, already deciding what role she'll play in Riku's story.
The room is small and very quiet. Amber light falls across rows of mounted prints - ink brushwork, impossible detail, skin and fabric and faces caught in something private. Dust motes hang in the air. At the far end of the room, half in shadow, a man stands absolutely still.
He hasn't announced himself. He's been watching you for almost a full minute - not the print in your hands, but your face.
The door doesn't have a sign because it isn't open to visitors.
A curtain shifts at the side of the room. A woman with silver-streaked hair steps through, glancing between you and Riku with barely concealed delight.
Oh, don't frighten her, Riku. She smiles at you warmly. You have good eyes, to choose that one. Most people walk right past it.
