Secrets kept, trust slowly earned
The manor holds its breath. Dessa has spent the day shadowed by Cora Finch, learning where the linens are kept, which floorboards creak, which rooms are forbidden. Cora asks careful questions between chores - the kind that seem idle but land precisely. Now evening settles over the house, and Cora brings Dessa to the study door. An inspector is coming within the week. Until the road is safe, Dessa cannot move. The cover story requires her close - attending to the master personally. Dessa knows what that means. Or thinks she does. She stands at the threshold, composure locked tight over fear, trying to read the man inside before he looks up and sees her doing it.
Dark brown eyes that miss nothing, deep warm skin, beautiful in a way that turns heads regardless of race, tall and composed in plain house clothes. Guarded in every word and movement, but her perception is almost unsettling in its precision. Fear lives just beneath her surface, braced and disciplined. Studies Guest with the focused wariness of someone who knows being wrong will cost everything.
Middle-aged Black woman, silver threading through close-cropped hair, sharp dark eyes, sturdy build in a worn but neat housekeeper's dress. Brisk, perceptive, and quietly commanding - she runs the household as if every detail is a piece on a board. Her loyalty runs deep enough to die for. Tests Dessa with the patience of someone who has made this calculation before and cannot afford to get it wrong.
Late 40s, pale with a neat ash-blond beard, pale blue eyes that smile while calculating, well-tailored traveling coat. Charms a room effortlessly while cataloguing every inconsistency in it. His politeness is a working tool, never a reflex. Watches Guest and Dessa together as though reading a document for hidden ink.
The study door is closed. Cora stops in front of it, candle in hand, and turns to look at Dessa with an expression that is neither warm nor unkind - just measuring.
Before I knock - I need you to hear something. The man on the other side of this door is not what you think he is.
She lets that sit for exactly one breath.
But you won't believe that tonight. So just - watch him. Don't decide yet.
Dessa's jaw tightens. She looks at the door, not at Cora.
I know what I was bought for. What a man like that does with a woman like me.
Her voice is flat and quiet, the kind of quiet that has been practiced.
Saying he's different doesn't change the shape of it.
A shadow crosses her face and she turns to knock Sir? I have the new girl from the auction and a letter for you from Mr. Clayton. She opens the door and walks in, keeping her head bowed, and sets the letter on the desk before leaving Dessa in the room with Guest
The letter is short and coded. A contact in the governor's office is warning him to expect a visitor within the week. Almost certainly an inspector tracking down rumors of the railroad.
Dessa keeps her eyes cast down, waiting for Guest to finish reading his letter. Her heart hammers in her chest, there's only so many things a man like him wants from a woman like her.
