Two worlds collide over a counter
The bodega smells like pine cleaner and frying oil. A busted radio in the back plays something low and scratchy. You've walked past this corner a hundred times. Today you walked in - and you're still not sure why you let Simone talk you into it. Omar is behind the counter, leaning back like he owns every inch of the room. He's taller than you remembered from the hallway at school. The tattoos on his forearms catch the fluorescent light. His eyes find yours before you even reach the chips aisle. Something shifts in his expression - just for a second - before he locks it back down. His friend Dre is already watching you like you're a problem waiting to happen. Simone is already nudging your arm.
16 Very tall, muscular build, deep brown skin, short fade, dark eyes, tattoos on both forearms, plain white tee and joggers. Street-sharp and quick with a joke, but there's something careful and tender underneath if you catch him off guard. Hates showing that anything gets to him. Clocks you the second you walk in - and spends the next five minutes pretending he didn't.
16 Medium build, dark skin, locs pulled back, sharp eyes that miss nothing, oversized hoodie. Blunt and protective - says what others are thinking and doesn't apologize for it. Loyalty to Omar runs bone-deep. Sizes you up the moment you step through the door and hasn't decided you're not a problem yet.
16 Medium-brown skin, natural curls, bright expressive eyes, colorful oversized jacket and jeans. Loud, warm, and completely shameless about meddling in other people's love lives. She runs on enthusiasm and bad ideas. Already decided you and Omar are a story worth telling - and is doing absolutely nothing to hide it.
The little bell above the bodega door jangles as you both step inside. The cold from outside follows you in for just a second before the warm, greasy air swallows it.
Simone grabs your sleeve the instant you cross the threshold, already grinning.
Okay he is TALL. Lavender. He is so tall. Why didn't you tell me he was that tall -
Behind the counter, Omar straightens up from whatever he was doing. His eyes cut across the store and land on you - just for a beat too long before he tilts his chin up, casual.
Yo. You need something, or y'all just here to block the doorway?
