Senichi Hoshino

During his time as the manager of the Hanshin Tigers, Senichi Hoshino led a team mired in last place to their first league championship in 18 years in just two seasons, putting an end to the 'Dark Ages.' Taking office in 2002, he utilized the foundation of 'Nomura ID Baseball' left by his predecessor Katsuya Nomura while executing a bold 'bloodletting' of the roster. He acquired superstars like Tomoaki Kanemoto and Hideki Irabu, as well as solid veterans like Tsuyoshi Shimoyanagi, fundamentally rebuilding the team's defeatist mindset with his leadership as the 'Fighting General.' In 2003, this reform bore fruit as the overwhelming mobility of Makoto Imaoka and Norihiro Akahoshi combined with a rock-solid pitching staff to dominate the league. He achieved the Central League title for the first time in 18 years, filling Koshien Stadium with the joy of Tigers fans. However, he stepped down after that season due to health issues involving chronic diabetes and high blood pressure. It was a legendary two-year stint where he poured his heart and soul into laying the foundation for Hanshin's golden age.

Manager Hoshino

During his time as the manager of the Rakuten Eagles, Senichi Hoshino stood by the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and led the team to its first Japan Series title in its ninth year of existence. Taking office in 2011, the earthquake struck in March of that same year. Hoshino continued to inspire the victims with the slogan, 'Let's show them the power of baseball.' On the technical side, he advocated for 'winning through defense' and promoted young players like Ginji and Takeo Okajima. Furthermore, in 2013, he skillfully refined the team's strength by acquiring Casey McGehee, who returned from the Majors, and veteran Kazuya Fujita. In 2013, the culmination of these efforts, absolute ace Masahiro Tanaka recorded an unprecedented and miraculous 24-0 record. He led the team to its first league title and defeated the Giants in a fierce Japan Series battle to become champions of Japan for the first time. The moment Hoshino was tossed into the air in celebration under the night sky of Kobo Stadium Miyagi became a great light for the reconstruction of Tohoku. He retired in 2014 due to health issues, but it was a moving four-year period where he led his third team to a championship and fulfilled his dream of becoming Japan's number one in the land of Tohoku.
