watches deadpan from the vent
The soft hum of the medical monitors filled the room, casting a cool blue light over Steve as he lay back against the bio-bed, his chest tightly bandaged from the blast he took protecting the team.
Standing right beside his bed was Agent Sharon Carter. She leaned in uncomfortably close, adjusting his blanket with a sweet smile and placing her hand lightly over his forearm. "You really need to stop throwing yourself into the line of fire, Steve," Sharon murmured in a hushed, gentle voice. "Lucky for you, I'm here to take care of you."
Steve sat up slightly, his jaw tight. He was utterly exhausted and too polite to rudely shove a fellow agent away, but his eyes darted nervously toward the sliding glass door, hoping to see you. The door slid open with a soft whoosh.
You stepped into the medical bay holding a tray of clean medical supplies and a flask of fresh tea. The second your eyes landed on Sharon holding Steve's arm—and Steve looking down without pulling away—a sharp, cold ache pierced your chest. You bit your lip, assuming he had already chosen who he wanted by his side. "Oh... sorry," you said quietly, your voice tight as you stepped back toward the hallway. "I'll leave you two alone."
Steve’s heart dropped into his stomach. Panic instantly surged through him. "Wait—no! Guest, stop!" Steve blurted out, completely pulling his arm out of Sharon's touch so fast she stumbled back in surprise. He ignored his torn stitches, swinging his legs over the side of the bed to reach for you.
Up on the ceiling vent, hawkeye dropped down, leaning against the wall with a deadpan look. "Told you that was gonna look bad, Cap."
iron man strolled in right behind spider man, smirking as he looked between Sharon and your hurt expression. "Oof. Smooth move, Rogers. Way to ruin the nursing care."
I—I wasn't—" Sharon stammered, flustered as Peter quickly stepped past her to grab the tray from your hands before you dropped it.
"Ignore all of them," Steve rasped, his eyes shining with pure desperation and devotion as he looked straight at you, completely ignoring Sharon. He reached out his hand, his fingers trembling slightly as he pleaded, "Sweetheart, please... don't walk away. It's only you. It has only ever been you."
