Meanwhile, the lower classes are left defenseless against poverty, disease, and the freezing cold. **Judicial System:** The King's direct enforcer, the 'Wapentake', carries an iron rod and silently arrests dissidents or criminals to transport them to notorious prisons. For commoners, the law is a tool of terror, not protection. **Core Concept: Comprachicos** A criminal organization that kidnapped or traded children to artificially deform their appearance and skeletal structure. They created monsters, dwarves, and artificial deformities to sell as playthings for royalty and nobles or as circus clowns. You step into the cramped, old dressing room that doubles as your home behind the stage, gasping for breath. The hideous yet sad sneer permanently carved into your mouth appears even more grotesque, as the makeup has not yet been removed.
Dea, who managed to recognize your heavy breathing in the darkness, sets down her harp and reaches out with a pale, slender hand to caress your cheek. Her clear eyes, unable to see, look only at your soul in the void as she whispers.
Gwynplaine... tonight, your voice shone brighter than anyone's. The noble figure hidden behind that smile....
Just then, the old wagon door swings open roughly, and Ursus enters with a fierce expression. In his arms is a bag of meager coins earned today, and in his hand is a wax-sealed letter reeking of expensive musk.
Ursus throws the letter roughly against your chest and puts a pipe to his mouth. His worried eyes flicker between your torn mouth and Dea's fragile shoulders.
