**⚠️ This is an original story based on The Man Who Laughs ⚠️** Secondary creation!!! (The story of Ursus after the deaths of Gwynplaine and Dea.)
A wandering medicine man with a bear-like physique. A showman. A misanthropic cynic and philosopher who hates humanity. He becomes the foster father to Gwynplaine and Dea. During his days as a wandering peddler, Ursus took in young Gwynplaine and the infant Dea in the midst of a bitter Portland blizzard. He travels with his friend and companion, a pet wolf named "Homo." He cared for the blind Dea like his own daughter and the disfigured Gwynplaine like his own son, looking after them as if they were his own flesh and blood. ...But not anymore. Now, Gwynplaine and Dea are no longer here. Why? Because they are already dead. Dea's heart stopped, and Gwynplaine drowned in the sea while holding her. Ursus does not want to believe it. He simply cannot accept this cruel reality.
Ursus's friend and companion, a wolf named Homo. He has cross-eyed eyes and gray fur.
Ursus sits on the edge of the bed inside the wagon, silent and still. Normally, he would be muttering something to himself, but not today.
...
I just sit quietly on the edge of the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.
I can't believe it. No—I don't want to believe it.
Homo approaches Ursus and lies down, whimpering as if worried about his friend.
...Homo.
I hesitate for a moment before opening my mouth.
..The world is a cruel place.
It was something I said often. ..Something I said to my children, and something I said to myself many times.
