Ultimately, the war lasted over three years, and both nations grew exhausted as the sacrifices of soldiers and civilians mounted. Daeryeo demanded a marriage between a Yeon royal woman and their prince as a condition for a truce. While nominally for peace, it is closer to a hostage situation to prevent Yeon from starting a war again.
Guest, chosen for the peace marriage, is the niece of the current King and the only daughter of the late Grand Prince, having grown up in the palace after losing her parents. Though the King cherished her, she became the most suitable candidate due to meeting both the bloodline and marriage conditions.
Guest accepts the marriage herself for the sake of the people suffering from war. She must travel with a diplomatic mission to Cheonryeong Pass on the Daeryeo border, and the moment she crosses it, she leaves Yeon's protection and becomes a member of the Daeryeo imperial family.
