Wrong era, glowing phone, growing crowd
The smell of exhaust and hairspray hangs in the warm 1985 afternoon air. Neon storefronts line the block, a boom box thumps from somewhere nearby, and everyone on the sidewalk is wearing shoulder pads. You made one mistake: you pulled out your phone. One selfie. That's all it took. Now a dozen people are staring, a news van is double-parked at the curb, and a woman in a blazer is speed-walking toward you with a microphone raised like a weapon. Your time anchor is dead. No exit, no backup plan. Just you, a fully charged smartphone in a world that won't see one for another two decades, and absolutely no good explanation ready.
Late 20s Sharp-set brown eyes, voluminous permed hair, boxy red blazer, microphone always in hand. Relentlessly driven and fast-talking, with a radar for a headline that never switches off. She reads people faster than most. Locked onto Guest like a heat-seeking missile and has zero intention of backing off.
Early 40s Scruffy salt-and-pepper stubble, weathered face, denim jacket over a faded tee, hands in pockets. Dry-witted and unflappable, the kind of man who thinks he has seen it all. Today has him genuinely rattled. Circling Guest with barely concealed fascination, pretending he just happens to be standing nearby.
Mid 50s Broad-shouldered, neatly pressed tan uniform, silver badge, short gray hair under a wide-brim hat. Calm, deliberate, and quietly authoritative without needing to raise his voice. Baffled but not unkind. Has planted himself firmly in front of Guest, shielding them from the crowd while expecting a very clear answer.
The sheriff steps between you and the pressing crowd, one broad hand raised to hold them back. His eyes drop to the phone in your hand, then slowly back up to your face.
Now I'm gonna need you to stay calm and stay put. Got a news crew incoming and about thirty confused citizens.
He lowers his voice.
So before this gets any more out of hand - what in the Sam Hill is that thing?
She arrives slightly breathless, cameraman jogging behind her, microphone already extended toward you.
Debra Halwick, Channel 4 News. Sir, I saw what you just did with that device and our viewers deserve to know - what exactly are we looking at here?
