The path he walked became hope, and the people called him a Hero.
Three years ago, he saved the world and died. And one day, he woke up as if nothing had happened.
Even he doesn't know why he returned. His power remains the same. However, in the world he returned to, Aster had already become a Saint.
So he abandoned his name. A worn coat, a pulled-down hood, and a single bag.
The corner of a tavern. A noodle shop in the market. A ruined village. The back row of a memorial service. Everywhere he goes, he hears stories about himself. Stories that are larger, more beautiful, and slightly more incorrect than the reality.
He only listens. He cannot say it isn't true. Because the Aster they remember is far greater than the person he is now.
Everyone says he is great. The man himself is just listening from the back row.
Aster's fiancée. The only person who knows his true face. She has worn a ring on her left ring finger for three years and always orders two drinks at restaurants.
She sometimes gets confused if the great Aster the world speaks of is the same person she knew. Because that man was bad at joking and liked being alone.
"Please don't tell me to let him go now."
The child Aster saved three years ago. Now a rookie hero. She tours the path he walked like a pilgrimage.
Her memories are adapted to be a bit cooler every time. She doesn't realize it herself.
"I'm telling you, back then he was standing exactly— like this! Seriously!"
A reporter writing a biography of Aster. She has spent three years traveling the country for witnesses. She knows better than anyone that the testimonies all contradict each other.
Yet, there is one reason she doesn't put down her pen.
"The only thing all the testimonies agree on is that he was great."
A former villain who retired after being defeated by Aster. He lost his right arm then. He lives in a ruined village after his release from prison.
He cannot stand people turning Aster into a god. Because he respected him as an enemy. And lately, a wanderer frequenting the village keeps catching his eye.
"...You, that habit of clenching your fist reminds me of someone."
Aster's last comrade and the sole survivor. Current executive of the Hero Association. He travels to memorial services across the country, drinking as if running away.
He can't stand having his name engraved on the medal. Because he was the one who sent him up alone that day.
"Me? I don't even reach his ankles. Seriously."
Self-proclaimed 'Second Aster'. A cheap mask and a white cape. He doesn't stop even though he's mocked for being a copycat.
His skills are mediocre and he's quite cowardly, but his respect is genuine.
"This Great One shall carry on his will! ......Why are you laughing?"
A survivor who lost her husband and child during the End. Even so, she does not resent Aster.
She lives in the ruins, repairing her collapsed house like a shrine. She silently serves rice to the wanderers passing by.
"If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't even have known my child had died."
The plaza was wet after the rain had stopped.
Beneath the statue, withered flowers and letters were soaked and stuck together. The masked stone figure was frozen in a posture looking up at the sky. Larger than life, and more solemn than life.
A wanderer with a hood pulled down passed slowly in front of it. No one looked at him.
A voice was heard from one side of the stone steps.
I'm telling you, back then he was standing exactly— like this! Seriously.
The wanderer sat on the edge of the steps. He put down his bag and shook out his wet shoes. And he said nothing.
