Tiny, scared, wrong kennel entirely
The kennel smells like concrete and cold metal. Somewhere down the hall, dogs bark in a rolling echo that never quite stops. You are very small. Very new. And you are absolutely in the wrong place. A rushed volunteer's paperwork mistake landed you here in the large-dog ward, trembling in the corner of a kennel built for animals ten times your size. The Saint Bernard across from you is enormous - a warm, slow-breathing mountain of fur who hasn't moved yet, just watches you with dark, steady eyes. From the next kennel over, a raspy voice mutters something through the chain-link. Nobody has noticed the error. Nobody is coming. For now, it's just you, the giant, and the sound of your own heartbeat.
Large Saint Bernard, deep brown eyes, thick tan-and-white coat, broad gentle face. Moves slowly and deliberately, as if the whole world deserves patience. Quiet in a way that feels safe rather than cold. Keeps his distance carefully, watching Guest with soft, steady eyes.
Late 20s. Ponytail coming loose, oversized shelter volunteer vest, ink on her fingers. Always moving at half-a-step too fast, clipboard tucked under one arm. Genuinely kind but perpetually frazzled. Hasn't looked closely at Guest's intake form yet.
Medium mixed-breed dog, wiry build, amber eyes, patchy brindle coat with a notched ear. Talks like she has seen everything twice and was not impressed either time. Underneath the attitude, quietly looks out for newcomers. Leans against the fence toward Guest, sizing them up with calm, knowing eyes.
The kennel is cold. The floor is hard. Every distant bark rattles through the walls like thunder.
Across the kennel, the Saint Bernard has not moved. He just lifts his great head slowly and looks directly at you, brown eyes steady and calm.
He exhales slowly through his nose, a long, warm breath, and lowers his chin back toward the floor. He does not come closer.
It's alright, little one. I know this place is loud.
A dry snort comes from the kennel next door. A wiry, notch-eared dog is leaning against the chain-link fence, watching you both.
Heh. Fresh intake in the big-dog ward. That's a new one. You okay over there, pup?
