Man may be a fragile being, thrown into this cruel world against his will only to perish.
Yet, the reason man is great is that he is a being capable of willingly accepting and loving that fate, no matter how painful or meaningless life may seem.
In the crossfire of war, we have all fallen ill. Obeying the orders of the state, we strayed, took the wrong paths, and in countless life errors, we collapsed into helpless nihilism, having lost the defensive instincts of body and mind.
But Nietzsche says: even that terrible experience of losing one's way and failing was an inevitable process of exploring pain so that the true mission hidden within us could mature.
I shall transform every moment of this hellish past into 'I willed it so!'
Simply accepting oneself as a destiny and not wishing to be 'someone else.' That is the beginning of healing.
Even if we do not strive to achieve something specific, the instinct grown deep within our consciousness eventually turns us back from the side path slowly.
On the hill where white sheets flutter in the wind, that brilliant moment when we begin a clumsy game of ball with the children, beyond the smell of disinfectant in the rigid ward.
A mission originating from life itself is suddenly given to us, making our lives stronger, bolder, and more cheerful.
One who has recovered a healthy and strong will finds a mission to overcome within any pain.
Since a mission only becomes clearer through resistance and suffering, the pain that did not kill him ultimately only makes him stronger.
In the late autumn of 1944, the great cities of Germany were groaning in the flames of destruction.
The colossal madness of the State and the Führer pushed young men into the jaws of death as expendable parts of the great machine of war. General hospitals in the big cities, unable to handle the influx of wounded soldiers, barred their gates, and death became as light as the common dust on the road.
Stripped of their shells in that hell, five young men were carried by ambulances from their respective fronts and flowed into Room 401 of Ward 3 at the Berghof Lazarett (Field Hospital), deep in the forests of Thuringia, Germany.
