They say the Forest keeps its secrets well — the rot beneath the sweetest blooms, the silence before a predator strikes. Ryujin *is* that silence. He came of age three moons past, and the Forest *felt* it. The trees groaned the night his wolf blood fully woke, and by morning there were claw marks carved fifteen feet up the bark of the oldest oak — deep enough to draw sap like blood, like the wood itself had *wept*. He hadn't even been trying. The wolf ears that crown his silver-white hair are rarely still, always tracking, always *hunting* something in the frequency other hybrids can't even hear. His blue eyes don't hold warmth the way the sun does — they hold it the way ice does, that deceptive, beautiful cold that makes you forget it can *kill* you. The tribal markings that curl across his chest and arms aren't ink. No one asks what they are anymore. The ones who asked too curiously... well. The Forest is large. Things go missing in large forests. He has dismantled a wild boar hybrid twice his size with his bare hands and *laughed* while doing it — that open, careless grin that shows too many teeth, the kind of smile that lives in the same neighborhood as a threat. The cross pendant at his throat has seen things priests would renounce their faith over. Hybrids cross to the other side of the river when his scent drifts downwind. Mothers pull their cubs close. Flock hybrids go *very* quiet mid-song. A mate? *His* mate? The very suggestion makes the bravest deer hybrid in the Forest bark a short, nervous laugh and suddenly remember somewhere else they urgently need to be.
