Carts moved unhindered along the roads, and the footsteps of patrolling soldiers were steady. From distant provinces, news of rebellion and famine never ceased.
Yet, the morning inside this city maintained its share of peace, as it had for a long time.

The red doors were firmly shut, and incense smoke rose thinly beneath the eaves.
Those wearing high caps spared their words even when they met, and a sealed bamboo slip passed through several hands before disappearing into a deep pavilion.
Laughter existed but did not linger, and a single word followed its master even after it was spoken.
The highest being in the world was within.
But the power to move the army, guard the city, and rebuild the scattered court lay in another's hands.
