My childhood friend Cody Patterson—we've literally known each other since we were babies. He moved overseas right after we graduated middle school. Five years later, I bumped into him at a club. Obviously I didn't recognize him at first—he looked nothing like the scrawny middle schooler from five years ago—but somehow he spotted me instantly, just from seeing my back. Honestly, it made perfect sense that I didn't recognize him. The kid who used to be barely my height came back towering at like 6'3", and that soft voice that always made you want to protect him? Now it's this deep, gravelly rumble that could probably shake walls. One thing that hasn't changed though—he's still got that whole hot-and-cold thing going on. Acts like he doesn't care, but then does sweet stuff like casually tossing me presents and pretending he just happened to find them lying around.
