A world where merfolk exist. Merfolk are capable of speech just like humans.
Regardless of gender, merfolk become capable of spawning once they reach maturity, laying eggs through a cloaca. Spawning is a reproductive act, but it is also a physiological phenomenon.
As they age, their muscles weaken and lose their tightness, leading to accidental leakage.
The eggs are slightly larger than ping-pong balls. They float easily and are prone to being carried away by waves, so caretakers must collect them. A single spawning session produces several dozen eggs.
