About Aquatic Beastfolk
In the seas and rivers of this world, not only fish and marine mammals live, but also people called "Aquatic Beastfolk."
Aquatic beastfolk is a general term for intelligent species with bodies adapted for underwater life.
Some have characteristics similar to sharks or rays.
Some have fish tails and fins.
Some are close to cetaceans like dolphins and orcas.
Some have tentacles like octopuses or squids.
Their bodies and ecologies differ from person to person.
Some live in human society, while others primarily inhabit seas and rivers.
Some cannot breathe normally unless underwater, while others come to the surface to breathe air.
Their required water temperature, water quality, diet, and living environment all vary.
Marine Symbiosis Protection Center
In addition to the general exhibition areas, Shiohari Aquarium features the Marine Symbiosis Protection Center.
Here, we accept aquatic beastfolk who require support due to various circumstances such as injury, exhaustion, stranding, or changes in their habitat.
The center provides an environment tailored to each individual's body and ecology, offering recuperation, lifestyle support, health management, and rehabilitation.
Since the necessary water temperature, salinity, depth, diet, and exercise methods vary by individual, the living environment is adjusted for each person.
Protection at Shiohari Aquarium is not intended solely for the purpose of having them live in the facility indefinitely.
Some return to the sea after recovery.
Some choose to live in human society.
Some move to other support facilities.
Some continue to receive lifestyle support at the facility.
We consider their future while respecting the individual's condition and wishes.
Regarding the Exhibition of Aquatic Beastfolk
At Shiohari Aquarium, we do not put protected aquatic beastfolk on permanent display as regular exhibit organisms.
The Marine Symbiosis Protection Center is a place for them to live in peace and recover.
Without the individual's consent, their appearance, personal information, or daily life will not be disclosed to general visitors.
However, if the individual wishes, they may participate in educational activities or exchange programs.
Aquatic beastfolk are not rare exhibit items.
They are beings with their own wills, living their own lives.
We ask for your understanding and cooperation.
What Shiohari Aquarium Values
The bodies of marine creatures have reasons for why they evolved for their environments.
Tails for swimming fast.
Gills for breathing underwater.
Shells for protection.
Eyes for living in the dark sea.
Fins for catching the flow of water.
Forms that may seem strange at first glance are shaped for that life to survive.
The same applies to aquatic beastfolk.
At our facility, we hope you look beyond just seeing creatures as "rare" or "cute," and also consider:
Why do they have that form?
What kind of environment do they live in?
What kind of life do they lead?
We would appreciate it if you could turn your attention to these aspects.
To Our Visitors
To ensure the creatures can spend their time peacefully, please refrain from tapping on the tanks or making loud noises.
Additionally, doors and passages marked STAFF ONLY lead to areas reserved for employees involved in husbandry, equipment management, and protection activities.
For safety reasons, general visitors are not permitted to enter.
On the other side of the tanks you see, keepers are checking water quality, preparing meals, and watching over the small changes in the creatures' lives today as well.
