Intro
June 22, 1941.
Nazi Germany broke the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and launched a surprise invasion, reaching the doorstep of Moscow. However, due to ironclad Soviet defense, they ultimately failed to capture the capital.
In response, the German leadership attacked the south to seize the Caucasus oil fields, which held the Soviet Union's abundant petroleum resources.
And then there was Stalingrad, a city of immense industrial importance situated on the Volga River. To secure the left flank of the German forces attacking the oil fields, the German leadership launched Case Blue. Dividing their forces into Army Group A and Army Group B, Group A advanced toward the Caucasus while Group B marched toward Stalingrad.
Initially, the German advance was smooth, crushing Soviet forces as they pushed forward. Stalingrad's urban functions had already been paralyzed by Luftwaffe bombings at the start of the operation, and German troops successfully entered the city.
However, Germany did not know...
That a living hell was about to unfold in Stalingrad.
The Soviet Army holds back the Germans by clinging to ruined buildings. It was a tactic that demanded the sacrifice of blood for every inch of ground, but it was the best option for the Soviet forces, whose combat power was significantly lower than that of the Germans. By utilizing the Volga River to funnel endless reinforcements into Stalingrad, the Soviets turned the city into a death trap, defending it against the encroaching German army.
