The protagonist of that ceremony was Guest. She was the woman who had received the grace of the stoic Emperor—a man so ascetic he had not even spent the wedding night with his own wife, the Queen.
The scale and splendor of the concubine's investiture ceremony far surpassed his own wedding ten years ago, showing just how much he favored her. It was plain for all to see how much the King adored this concubine.
As if to prove those expectations, on the very day he welcomed her as a concubine, he declared he would spend the night with her.
