The end of poverty is the beginning of a new life.
Seulgi fell asleep holding onto Guest's sleeve, but woke up again sometime in the early hours of the morning. It was a habit. She was a child who didn't know how to sleep deeply.
As she tossed and turned, she realized Guest's face was right in front of her. A distance close enough to feel each other's breath. The corners of Seulgi's mouth twitched upward slightly, regardless of her will.
She carefully reached out and touched a single strand of your hair. The hair slipped through her fingers. It was soft.
...You're pretty.
It was a murmur quieter than the sound of breathing. It wasn't meant for anyone to hear. It just leaked out.
Then, she suddenly noticed the shadows under Guest's eyes. Traces of having returned late from a convenience store part-time job yesterday, and the day before. You had collapsed into sleep, too tired to even wash properly.
Seulgi's expression clouded over. Her fingertips brushed against the skin under Guest's eyes.
It must be hard for you too, Sis.
As those words left her mouth, the back of her throat grew hot. It wasn't that she didn't know she was a burden. Even knowing it, she couldn't let go of this hand.
Seulgi stared at Guest's face for a long time before finally sitting up. Her joints made a popping sound. She pulled the paper-thin blanket up to Guest's shoulders to cover you, then sat leaning her back against the wall.
She fumbled in her pocket and pulled out a crumpled cigarette. She didn't have a lighter. It didn't matter. She put the unlit cigarette in her mouth and looked up at the ceiling.
The cracked ceiling. There were days when rain leaked through those cracks. Nights when Guest would set out a bucket and the two of you would sit there blankly.
...Fuck.
The softly uttered curse was muffled by the cigarette filter. Her chest felt tight, as if a heavy stone had been placed on it.
Her gaze returned to Guest. Your hand was peeking out from under the blanket. Thin, slender fingers. The back of the hand was rough from washing dishes and stocking convenience store shelves.
Seulgi gently took that hand. It was cold. She wrapped both of her hands around it as if to share her own body heat.
Because of me.
The sentence didn't end. She couldn't finish it. She adjusted her grip, afraid her bitten nails might leave marks on Guest's hand. Yet, she still couldn't let go.
A semi-basement studio apartment. The fluorescent light flickered, emitting a cheap glow. The wallpaper was peeling in places, and beyond the small ventilation window—too pathetic to even be called a window—only the occasional passerby's ankles could be seen.
2:00 AM.
Seulgi, who had been curled up without even a proper blanket, opened her eyes. Only after confirming the steady sound of Guest's breathing beside her did her stiff shoulders finally relax.
She wanted to smoke. Her mouth felt dry and her chest felt heavy. But fearing she might wake her sister if she got up, Seulgi suppressed the urge and turned toward Guest.
She stared at Guest's profile in the darkness for a long time. She reached out and gently grasped the edge of her sister's sleeve. Holding the fabric tight with two fingers, as if it were the only anchor left in the world.
...Sis.
She didn't mean to call out. It was just a sound that escaped her lips. A small, faint word like a sleep-muttered whisper melted into the darkness.
Her sister didn't answer. She was fast asleep. It seemed the fatigue of a grueling day held her consciousness in a firm grip and wouldn't let go.
Even though she knew there would be no answer—or perhaps because of it—she felt more relieved. It meant her sister was sleeping peacefully.
Seulgi tightened her grip on the sleeve a bit more. The fabric wrinkled and her knuckles turned white. Her fingertips were ragged, the result of biting them again a few days ago.
Raindrops began to fall outside the ventilation window. What started as one or two drops soon turned into a pitter-patter, drumming against the thin ceiling of the semi-basement. An old drainage pipe groaned inside the wall.
As Seulgi's eyes adjusted to the dark, the outlines of the room slowly emerged. The moldy walls, the cracked floor linoleum, a few ramen boxes stacked in the corner. And Guest lying next to her.
It was everything. This cramped, damp room, and this one person, were everything she had.
...It's raining.
After muttering to herself, she closed her eyes again. She felt like she could sleep this time. As long as she was here, where her sister's scent lingered.
