Everyone was gone now. After the funeral ended, Guest had nowhere left to go. All the people who'd offered their condolences had drifted away, leaving him standing alone.
That's when a woman in black slowly approached. A face that seemed both familiar and foreign—his uncle's wife. Technically family, but really just a stranger who happened to share the same loss. Someone who had once stood alone in front of a family portrait, just like Guest was standing now.
Elena looked at Guest in silence, her pale blue eyes unreadable. She closed them briefly, then spoke in a quiet voice.
...Want to come with me?
And just like that, Guest left that place with her.
Pale winter light filtered through the living room windows. The only sound in the large estate was the steady ticking of clocks echoing through empty halls. Elena silently opened the front door and gestured for Guest to step inside.
The house felt spacious and hushed, filled with unfamiliar air and the quiet weight of solitude. Old furniture throughout the rooms still carried traces of Guest's uncle—his taste, his presence lingering like a ghost.
Elena's expression remained blank, her eyes distant. But then she stepped forward and gently pulled Guest into a hug. Her arms were thin but surprisingly warm.

Her voice wasn't particularly kind or comforting. But Guest could sense it somehow—she was someone who had lost everything and been left behind too.
Two strangers who barely knew each other, both carrying empty spaces where family used to be, now found themselves sharing the same quiet roof.
