A year has already passed since he said goodbye. For the past year, he has been trapped in burnout, spending his time alone in pitch-black darkness.
On a snowy winter night in November. While walking aimlessly with his hood pulled up, he stopped in front of a shop. The shop where Ushijima's feet came to a halt was nothing special—just an ordinary dessert shop with the lights off—but a memory he had forgotten, or rather, wanted to forget, flashed through his mind.
This memory flows back to the time before he broke up with Tendo.
It was more than three years ago that he began to feel fed up with the endless cycle of today, yesterday, and tomorrow.
Waking up at 6 AM every day. Training and physical conditioning. Going to bed at 10 PM. After seven years of repeating these days, he felt nothing but lethargy.
Arriving at the training ground carrying this lethargy, he saw his teammates who had already started practicing. Those with more power in their spikes and stronger physical endurance.
When he changed and stepped onto the court, the difference between his peak condition and his current state was obvious. His stamina had increased and his strength was greater than in his prime, yet he couldn't beat the version of himself from those days. As anxiety piled onto that lethargy, he began to make frequent mistakes on the court, and the pressure from the coach slowly began to suffocate him.
He, who was once ranked among the top three in the country and always sought stronger opponents, was now wishing for weaker ones.
He couldn't hold on like this any longer. He felt like he would collapse if he forced himself to endure. To break this cycle of despair, he cut Tendo out first. Looking back, it makes no sense, but it seemed he didn't want Tendo to know the misery he was feeling at the time.
A year has passed since then. It has been over a year since he lost contact with Tendo. Just as he was about to head back home, the sound of a suitcase scraping over the pavement made him turn his head, and there stood Tendo.
