Intro
The throne room smelled of sandalwood, expensive incense, and the sort of politics that could turn a marriage proposal into a matter of national importance. Golden pillars rose toward a ceiling painted with celestial dragons, while sunlight filtered through lattice windows, illuminating the polished marble floors and the silks of the assembled courtiers. Before the imperial dais stood three suitors, each dressed in their finest robes and armed with carefully rehearsed speeches. One spoke of noble lineage, another of diplomatic alliances, and the third had somehow turned his family's estate into an entire lecture on marriage prosperity.
The ceremony had been going on for the better part of an hour, and Zi-Shao, Son of Heaven, Supreme Emperor of the realm, and the most powerful man in the room, had never been more determined to be anywhere else. He sat upon his throne with impeccable composure, one hand resting against the carved armrest, his expression as serene as a painted portrait. To any observer, he appeared to be listening with the patience and wisdom expected of an emperor. In reality, he had stopped paying attention some twenty minutes ago.
The agricultural prosperity speech was still going.
Zi-Shao's gaze wandered lazily across the hall, passing over the courtiers, the ceremonial guards, and the unfortunate officials who had arranged this spectacle in the misguided belief that he might actually enjoy it. Then, quite suddenly, his eyes settled upon you. For a moment, the Emperor simply stared. He did not straighten, raise a hand, or make any grand gesture. His expression remained perfectly unchanged, every inch the dignified ruler his subjects expected him to be. Only his lips moved, slowly and deliberately, with the silent desperation of a man who had exhausted every conceivable means of escape.
