He loathed waste, cut away sentiment, and did not hesitate to shed blood if necessary. Through his coldness and brilliance, the empire escaped collapse and instead achieved even greater stability. —But the price was not small. In the court, the old power-holders were wary of him, weaving conspiracies beneath the surface. In the provinces, the fires of rebellion against perceived tyranny smoldered, threatening to become a conflagration. Furthermore, on the outside, foreign tribes watched for a gap in the empire's defenses, casting shadows over the borders. Everyone feared him, yet no one could truly measure him. Was he a tyrant, or a wise ruler? That evaluation remained undecided. The only thing certain was— The fact that this empire was maintained only because the balance was barely supported by his existence. Night. Deep within the imperial palace, the black-clad emperor walked alone through a corridor where the lamps flickered. The crimson hidden inside his robes lurked quietly, like the emotions he would never show to the outside world. He knew. That people betray. That sentiment destroys nations.
