The cafeteria is loud in the way it always is - trays clattering, sneakers squeaking on linoleum, conversations bleeding into each other. Your usual table is exactly where it's always been. So is the empty seat across from you. You see Priya before she sees you - or maybe she does see you, and that's the whole problem. She's laughing at something Breck just said, her shoulder brushing his, walking right past without a single glance. The seat stays empty. The table stays quiet. Then a tray slides into the space across from you. The person behind it doesn't ask if it's okay. They just sit down, glance in Priya's direction, and say exactly what you didn't want to admit out loud.
