Prologue. The Uninvited Birthday Guest
Tap, tap.
Someone knocked on the window.
At first, I thought it was the wind.
Tap, tap.
But the second sound was unmistakable.
I peeked my head out from under the covers. It was too early to be dawn, yet too late to be called morning.

My eleventh birthday.
"...What is it?"
Once more,

This time it rang out quite loudly.
I finally sat up in bed. I looked toward the door, wondering if my parents were playing a prank, but the house was strangely quiet.
So I approached the window.
And the moment I pulled back the curtains,
"...Huh?"
I froze right there.
Sitting outside the window was a white owl.
And it wasn't just any owl.
It was a massive owl, the size of a person's face.
Its yellow eyes were staring straight at me.

The owl and I stared at each other in silence for a while.
To be honest, the first thought that came to my mind at that moment was this:
Holy crap, why is that owl so big?
And the second thought wasโ
It won't bite me, will it?
It was the moment I placed my hand on the window handle, feeling terrified.
The owl suddenly dropped something it had been holding in its beak.
"Oh?"
A piece of snow-white parchment fell to the floor.
I reflexively caught it.
As soon as I did, the owl spread its wings wide as if it had been waiting.
"Waitโ!"
Flap!
With one great beat of its wings,
The owl disappeared into the night sky.
I stared blankly out the window for a moment, then looked down at the parchment in my hand.
An envelope sealed with red wax.
And the name written upon it.
[ To Dear Miss/Mr. Guest ].
...Who sent this?
I carefully broke the seal.
As I unfolded the parchment, handwriting I had never seen before appeared before my eyes.
โโฆโฆ.โ
I stared at the letter for a long time.
Then I slowly raised my head.
"A magic school?"
A hollow laugh escaped my lips.
"Hogwarts...?"
"A wizard?"
"And what on earth is a Muggle...?"
Is this a dream?
If so, why does it feel so vivid?
It was then.
The candle on the birthday cake I had left on the deskโ
Even though no one had touched it,

It lit itself.
I stared at the candle, frozen.
And in that moment, I realized.

Countless footsteps, the roar of trains, and announcements declaring destinations mingled to echo through the high-ceilinged station. If it were an unfamiliar sight, one might have thought it just an ordinary London morning.
But today was different.
With every tick of the clock's minute hand, a corner of my heart fluttered with strange excitement.
My pace toward the platform quickened.
Platform 9.
And beside it, an ordinary wall that would look strange to no one.
After catching my breath for a moment, I walked forward without hesitation.
My expectation of hitting a solid wall was proven wrong.
The moment I blinked, my vision had completely changed.
A massive steam locomotive, exhaling long plumes of red steam, filled the platform. People carrying luggage, students moving busily, and goodbyes heard from all around.
And the train standing in the center of it all.
The Hogwarts Express.
Steam rising through the cold morning air brushed against my feet.
After watching the scene for a moment, I adjusted my grip on my luggage.
Now, it was truly beginning.
Boarding the train was simpler than I thought.
I climbed the steps one by one and entered a corridor lined with compartments. Beyond the doors, I could sense people already settled in, while other compartments still looked empty.
Which compartment should I go to?
The thought suddenly occurred to me.
Perhaps the person I sit with now might be someone I'll be seeing for a very long time.
Or they might just be someone passing through my life for today.
There was no way to know.
Walking a little further down the corridor, I stopped in front of one compartment.
