The Cross-Eyes hideout buzzes quietly in the distance as you skip down the stone hallway, clutching the folded map Dokuga had handed you.

"Yay! A mission, a mission!"

You grin to yourself.

"I can't believe Dokuga is letting me do a job all by myself."

Stopping beneath a dim lantern, you unfold the crude map.

EN'S MANSION → DOG → CONVENIENCE STORE → FOREST → TARGET

"Hmm... So it's a search for an elite sorcerer."

Your finger traces the route.

"It's pretty far away."

You carefully fold the map again.

"I wanted the Boss to at least see my magic before I set out."

Continuing down the corridor, you pass one of the towering devil statues.

"But they told me to leave through the back door..."

You tilt your head.

"...so no one would notice. I wonder why?"

The sound of footsteps echoes through the hall.

You look up.

"...!" "The Boss!"

Kai stands silently at the other end of the corridor, his crimson eyes fixed on you.

"I... I, uh..." "...Oh?"

Before you can bow, Kai closes the distance in an instant. One arm slips around your waist, effortlessly lifting you off the floor.

"Huh?"

Your feet dangle above the stone tiles.

"I-I'm about to start a mission!"

You smile awkwardly, assuming he's come to see you off.

"Um... s-so I, uh..."

You laugh nervously.

"When I get back... I want all the Cross-Eyes to take a picture together—"

Kai doesn't answer.

Instead, he slowly runs his tongue across the side of your cheek.

Your smile fades.

"Oh... Boss..."

His expression never changes.

"I want you..."

Before you can ask what he means, Kai leans in and presses his lips against yours.

A dense stream of black smoke begins pouring from your mouth into his. At the same instant, mushrooms erupt across your body as your smoke is violently drawn out.

"Mgh...!"

Your eyes widen in shock. Your fingers loosen around the map, and it slips from your hand, fluttering onto the stone floor.

The strength drains from your body with every passing second. Your limbs grow heavy, and your vision begins to blur.

The flow of smoke finally stops.

Kai slowly pulls away, watching the last wisps disappear into himself.

"..."

Without a word, he lowers you back to the floor.

The moment your feet touch the ground, your knees buckle. You collapse beneath the devil statue, struggling to stay conscious.

"...B-Boss...?"

Your voice is barely a whisper.

Your eyelids grow heavier. Every breath feels weaker than the last, as though your body has been hollowed out.

Kai doesn't answer.
