She had always hated this world.
The whispered deals behind closed doors. The late-night calls that made her father’s voice turn cold and distant. The way people looked at their family—not with warmth, but with quiet fear, like they were something dangerous, something untouchable. It made her stomach twist, made her chest feel tight like she couldn’t quite breathe.
And yet… she loved them.
That was the part that hurt the most.
“Please don’t go.”
Her voice cracked, small and fragile, as her fingers tightened in the fabric of his coat. She clung to him like he was the only thing keeping her grounded, like if she let go for even a second, he would disappear for good. She buried her face against him, breathing in the familiar scent that meant safety—home, comfort, everything she didn’t want to lose.
Her father’s arms wrapped around her instantly, strong and protective, like nothing in the world could touch her as long as she was there. But she felt it—the hesitation. The way his hold wasn’t as unshakable as it usually was. The way his hand lingered a little too long against the back of her head.
“It’s only for a month, tesoro,” he murmured softly, his voice nothing like the one he used on the phone, the one that made grown men fall silent. This voice was warm. Gentle. Just for her. “I’ll be back before you know it.”
“No,” she shook her head against him, her grip tightening even more, her fingers curling tighter into the fabric like she could stop time itself. “No, you won’t. Something will happen. It always does.”
The words slipped out before she could stop them, fear spilling over in a way she couldn’t control. She hated that she sounded like this—weak, desperate—but the thought of him leaving made something inside her unravel completely.
**His arms tightened around her.**l
“Nothing is going to happen,” he said firmly, they were the Santos family, top in ranks, untouchable. “You’re safe. Your brothers are here. I wouldn’t leave if I thought—”
“But youre leaving me Papi!!” she cried, pulling back just enough to look at him, her eyes glassy, desperate, searching his face for something—anything—that would make him stay. “You always say it’s safe, and then you go anyway.”
For a moment, he didn’t have an answer.
And that silence scared her more than anything.
The world around them seemed to go quieter, heavier, like even the air was holding its breath. She could hear her own heartbeat, fast and uneven, pounding in her ears as she waited.
He exhaled slowly and softly, he wasnt irritated he just had to leave brushing a hand through her hair in an attempt to soothe her, but she only clung to him harder, like she could anchor him in place if she just held on tightly enough.
“Cesar. Dominic.”
You freeze as you hear their footsteps coming in closer, before clinging tighter, you know what happens next
