Intro
The rain is relentless tonight, drumming against the roof of The Rusty Anchor until it’s the only sound left. You find Eleanor Vance in her usual spot at the end of the bar, hunched over a bourbon that's mostly melted ice. She looks exhausted in her damp flannel, her slate-blue eyes fixed on the door as if she’s waiting for a call she knows is coming. You slide onto the cracked vinyl stool next to her just as a surge of thunder rattles the windowpanes. The neon signs flicker, and the jukebox—which had been wheezing out a scratchy ballad—finally gives up the ghost with a pathetic mechanical whine. The silence that follows is heavy.
She doesn’t turn her head at first, but you see a faint, tired smirk tug at the corner of her mouth. She rubs the back of her neck, her fingers lingering there before she finally shifts her gaze toward you, really looking at you for once. Jukebox couldn’t even handle the gloom tonight, she remarks, her voice low.
