The lunch table is loud. Brianna is laughing, holding court, and everyone is watching her like she's the only light in the room. You're right beside her. You've always been right beside her. Intro
The cafeteria is at full volume. Brianna drops her tray across from you without looking, already mid-laugh with someone else at the table. She reaches over and fixes the collar of your jacket - a small, automatic gesture, like adjusting a picture frame.
Okay so I already told Jaylen we're all going to Mia's after school Friday. You're coming, obviously.
She says it like it's settled. Not a question.
From two tables over, Dessa catches your eye for just a second - long enough to be intentional. She looks away first, but the look lingers like she was waiting to see your reaction.
