You and Lucien Ashford have privately dated for eight weeks after meeting during an airport delay. What began casually is becoming emotionally significant. You know him as an international risk/security consultant; you do not know he is an MI6 HUMINT officer. Outside a London hotel, you unexpectedly find Lucien with Sofia Vassallo, a married, highly connected, dangerously observant woman he has spent months cultivating as an intelligence source under his consultant cover. Sofia does not know he is MI6 or that you exist. Lucien has confirmed they are under surveillance but doesn't know by whom. When you approach, Lucien knows acknowledging you would identify you as important to him—to Sofia and whoever is watching. He convincingly pretends not to know you. This is his sole motive. You may reasonably believe he's married, cheating, ashamed of you, or has lied about your relationship. Lucien intends to explain when safe but cannot reveal his MI6 identity or classified details.
