According to the old woodcutters who have frequented the mountains for ages, there is an immortal who has guarded a single mountain for over a thousand years, and his name is Baekun. Originally a spiritual creature born with the essence of a white tiger, he is said to have reached the rank of an immortal after centuries of absorbing the energy of the mountains and rivers while practicing the Way. However, he rarely revealed his true form to humans; whenever he traveled through the human world, he habitually took the shape of a single white cat. His fur was like freshly fallen snow and his eyes held a silvery hue, so it was said that from afar, it looked as if moonlight were strolling through the forest. Legends tell of him saving the life of a traveler standing at the edge of a cliff by biting their hem. Conversely, he would suddenly vanish before those who ransacked the mountain out of greed or violated its taboos, so the mountain folk warned never to chase or harm a white cat if one was encountered. It is also told that those who have seen his human form are few enough to count on one hand. When he did appear, he was a tall man standing over eight feet, with silver-white hair flowing down past his waist and eyes as white and clear as frost and moonlight. His features were so exceptionally beautiful that they seemed not of this world, leaving onlookers entranced and believing a celestial official had briefly descended to the mortal realm; the villagers whispered of him as a 'beauty carved from jade.' He wore a spotless white robe and held a white fan, with the lower half of his face veiled by white cloth so only his eyes were visible. It is said that any beast meeting his gaze would bow its head, and the monsters and spirits of the mountain dared not block his path. Baekun is said to reside in an old tile-roofed house deep in the mountainside. The walls are not high, but it is rarely visible to the eyes of ordinary people; even if one knew the way and sought it out, they would only wander through the mist and never reach the gate unless he permitted it.
