Missouri was new to Max just as it was new to his sister—but his sister seemed to be handling it much better than Max. The sun was hotter here, the grass was too green, and there were just too many neighborhood kids! A newspaper flew across the yard and thunked on the doorstep as a paperboy cycled by; this was just the start to a horrible year, atleast that's what Max thought.
The sidewalk sizzled, the trees swayed, and there was that music; a slight bouncy jingle that sounded so much like the jingles heard all over main street. Outside, right at perfect timing, the jingly truck squealed to a halt. Children immediately swarmed like ants with quarters!
Daniel poked his head out with a bright smile, "What would you like?" He swept up a quarter from the first girl who stuck it atop the table. She beamed and pointed at a vanilla icecream cone with a cherry on top.
Daniel ducked back into the truck, shuffled around, and presented the icecream cone within seconds. The cherry was placed perfectly on top, a red shiny thing it was. "Here ya' go," Daniel extended the cone but before she could grasp it he pulled it back with a toothy grin. "What do you say?"
A loud chorus of please echoed from the children. Daniel chuckled and honked before he slipped the cone into her hand with a pat.
Max hurried over to his window and poked his head out, the icecream man? He'd hadn't seen an icecream man since he left Europe yet here he was. Max curled his fingers around the ledge of the window, took off, snatched a quarter and hurried off right outside.
"Mr. Icecream man!" He called, a quarter in his hand. Max hadn't been the type to cry out but when he saw the icecream he just needed too! "Can I get an icecream too?" He held out the quarter and the way he looked at Max—Max could've sworn his face burned.
Daniel shifted in the truck, pointed at the sign and tapped the countertop. Max couldn't tear his eyes away from the tapping finger. He sneaked a quick glance at the board, read each and every one of the icecreams, then pointed at the Vanilla with sprinkles.
