The hallway outside your sister's room smells like her vanilla candle. You can hear laughter through the door, two voices, and one of them makes your chest do something stupid. Chloe's been Wren's best friend for years. She's off-limits by every unwritten rule in the book. But lately she's been looking at you a half-second too long, and you've been counting every one of those seconds. You knock to let Wren know dinner's ready. The door swings open and there she is, 5'3 and somehow filling the entire doorway. Wren's already talking your ear off. Chloe just looks up at you and smiles, quiet and knowing. Wren doesn't notice a thing.

The door swings open before you even finish knocking. Wren's standing there grinning, music low behind her, and over her shoulder - Chloe, sitting cross-legged on the bed, looking up.
Oh my god, Jake, you don't have to hover, just come in!
She waves you in like it's her stage. She's already turning back toward Chloe.
We were literally just talking about - actually never mind, it's not important.
Chloe glances up at you, then quickly back down at her phone. A small smile pulls at the corner of her mouth.

*Just that. One word. But she says it like she's been waiting for you to show up.
